The Harcum Mile 1869-1969

Map_The Harcum Mile Program.png

For over one hundred years the south side of Montgomery Avenue between Morris Avenue and Pennswood Road in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania has been home to Harcum College. The Harcum School began in 1915 in a grand house on the southeast corner of the intersection of Morris Avenue and Montgomery Avenue. Over the years there have been expansions, subtractions, and name changes. The block became known as “the Harcum Mile”. Through time, thousands of students, faculty, and staff have considered the Harcum Mile home. The buildings along the Harcum Mile tell the story of Harcum College.

The Harcum Herald

HHV22N1.pdf

The Harcum Herald was a quarterly student newspaper that ran from approximately 1979 to 2003.  The student-written articles covered local and campus events.  Opinion pieces and cartoons were also common features.

This collection is missing some issues from the earliest years.  The numbering is incorrect on some issues.

The original papers may be viewed at the Trout Library Archives.

Scrapbooks: treasures from the past

CFFullerAckroyd_Scrapbook001-merged.pdf

Artifacts tell stories about a student's experience. Each of the scrapbooks in this collection was created by a student at Harcum College between 1938 and 1963. Each scrapbook is a collection of artifacts, newspaper clippings, photographs and documents related to the creator's time at the College.  Harcum was a women-only college until 2003.  These books are a snapshot into the lives of Harcum College women.  They answer the question, "what was it like to be a Harcum student in the early years and before the College was co-educational?"

Experience the life of a Harcum student from 1937-1963 through scrapbooks.

Rare books at Harcum

OctaviusHarcum1.JPG

The Trout Library archives and special collections holds a number of rare books.  The term "rare" can encompass both books that were of limited publication or have some kind of special connection to the College.  For example, we have a first English edition of Bambi by Felix Salten.  This would be considered rare in the classic sense that it went on to become very popular so the first editions are considered valuable.  Other books might not be rare in terms of value or publication but they belonged to or were written by people important to the history of the College. We have divided our rare books in to books that belonged to the Hatcher or Harcum families, books of the Klein family and other gems in the collection.

Historical photographs of Harcum College

This collection contains photographs documenting a wide variety of campus activities, people including alumnae, faculty, staff, students, commencements, convocations and ceremonies. The photographs document the growth and history of Harcum College as it developed over the course of its history. The photos cover a time from the early days of the College in 1915 to present day.  Photos are digitized and added regularly.
